Why your videos are boring (easy fix): But and therefore을 활용해, struggle이라는 서사를 만들어라
Think about the movie The Pursuit of Happiness.
Chris Gardner doesn’t just walk into a firm, shake a few hands, and instantly become a millionaire.
That would be a five-minute movie, and no one would care.
What makes the story unforgettable is the struggle: the eviction notices, the nights spent in a train station bathroom, the rejection after rejection, before he finally earns his shot.
That’s what keeps us watching.
Not the fact that he “succeeded,” but the way he kept running into walls, found ways around them, and eventually broke through.
Now
compare that to most people’s storytelling, especially in YouTube
videos. They’ll describe a product, a lesson, or even their own journey
in a straight line:
“This happened, then this happened, then this happened.”
It’s fine, but it’s flat.
There are no bends in the road, no obstacles, no tension. And without that, the listener has no reason to care.
Here’s where a little storytelling trick comes in.
Instead of pushing your story forward with endless “and then… and then… and then,” try weaving in just two small words:
But and therefore.
Watch how this changes the rhythm.
Flat version:
“I started a YouTube channel. I bought a camera and then I made videos. I uploaded them. I got some views and I kept posting.”
Not exactly gripping.
Dynamic version:
“I started a YouTube channel. At first, I thought it would take off instantly. I had good ideas and the right gear. But when I uploaded my first ten videos, nothing happened. Crickets.
Therefore,
I had to figure out what I was missing, which pushed me to study how
thumbnails and titles actually work. That’s when things finally started
moving.”
Same story. Totally different feel.
You can sense the tension, the conflict, the consequence. And that’s what keeps people listening.
This works anywhere.
A product review:
“The laptop is powerful, but it overheats quickly. Therefore, it’s not great for heavy editing.”
A fitness journey:
“I wanted to run a marathon, but I kept getting injured. Therefore, I had to change my training approach.”
An entrepreneurial story:
“We landed our first big client, but they almost backed out at the last minute. Therefore, we had to scramble and redesign everything in a week.”
