The 4 best digital writing platforms
Ahoy Digital Writer!
We’ve covered a lot over the past 4 days:
- The 10 biggest problems writers face
- The 5 reasons why EVERYONE should write online
- Why you should NOT start a blog (please trust us on this one)
- And how to make the writing process effortless, 250 words at a time
Which means, there’s really only one thing left:
The 4 Best Digital Writing Platforms
Without question, the 5 best platforms for getting distribution on your writing (regardless of topic) are:
- X (Twitter): 550 million users. 6 billion visits per month.
- LinkedIn: 900 million users. 1.6 billion visits per month.
- Medium: 100 million users. 200 million visits per month.
- Quora: 400 million users. 730 million visits per month.
These are GIANT platforms with more opportunity than you could ever know what to do with.
Now, whenever we tell new writers these are the platforms to publish on, here are some of the most common questions or objections:
“I don’t think my niche is on X or LinkedIn.”
Really?
You don’t think, out of hundreds of millions of users, ANYONE is interested in the topic you want to write about?
Whenever people say this, it’s because they wrote and published one or two things and didn’t immediately go viral. And so they think, “I guess my target reader isn’t here.” Which isn’t true.
The vast majority of the time, it’s not the platform.
It’s your own consistency.
It’s whether or not you are executing all the Digital Writing fundamentals (everything we train writers on in Ship 30 for 30).
And it’s your willingness to learn the nuances of each individual platform.
“I think those platforms are too saturated.”
Again, no they’re not.
Every year, every month, every single week… new writers & creators are building audiences on these platforms.
We have been creating content and writing online for over a decade, and we can tell you that opportunity is EVERYWHERE—and it’s only going to keep increasing.
These social platforms aren’t getting less popular over time.
They are getting MORE popular, MORE people are creating accounts, MORE people are consuming content, and MORE opportunities are being created for anyone who wants to play the game.
Saying a platform is “too saturated” is a cop out.
“I don’t have enough credibility so nobody is going to want to read my writing.”
Again, another faulty belief.
People think building an audience and becoming known for a niche you own means you have to have credibility first and THEN you can start writing online.
In reality, it’s flipped.
You start writing online—and THEN become more and more credible over time.
Just think about the content you consume. We’d bet the majority of it (think about what grabs your attention in your feed) has very little to do with the person’s “credibility,” and everything to do with their ability to write or create things that grab your attention and provide you some amount of value.
The person’s “credibility” is an afterthought.
Other Ways To Expand, Re-Use, and Republish Your Writing
This is one of the most powerful frameworks we teach in Ship 30 for 30.
- The more you write, the bigger your content library grows.
- The bigger your content library grows, the more data points you gather.
- The more data points you gather, the more you learn which topics your readers are most interested in.
- The more
you learn which topics your readers are most interested in, the more you
can give them what they will find most valuable.
- The more you can give readers things you know they will find valuable, the better your content will perform.
- The better your content performs, the bigger your audience becomes.
- The bigger your audience becomes, the more inspired you will feel to write.
But this is just the tip of the iceberg.
As your written library grows, NOW you have the opportunity to turn your writing into all sorts of other assets:
- You can read your content (or riff on the same ideas) in TikTok videos.
- You can read your content, expand, re-use, or compress your ideas in Instagram Reels.
- You can turn your written content into visual assets and publish them as photos on Instagram.
- You can turn your written content into slideshows and carousels and publish them as visuals on LinkedIn (you can do this on Typeshare, turning your writing into Decks).
- You can even turn your written content into long-form YouTube videos.
The point is: once you’ve written about a topic, that’s not the end.
That’s the beginning!
And you should consider re-using, expanding, or compressing what you’ve written into all sorts of different assets.
“What about Reddit? Facebook?”
Technically, any social platform where there are already millions and millions of users (aka: potential readers) would qualify as a Digital Writing Platform.
Even Reddit & Facebook.
(Reddit is a great example of a platform where “technically” people are writing, but the community there doesn’t lend itself well to writing and building an audience around your writing.)
That said, from a “writing” perspective, we still believe (from our own testing) that the best platforms are:
- X (Twitter)
- Medium
- Quora
Which is why we recommend you start here.
