Minerva University (formerly Minerva Schools at Keck Graduate Institute) is a private residential university headquartered in San Francisco, California.[1] It was established in 2012 by Ben Nelson using $25 million in venture funding from Benchmark Capital. All classes are conducted as seminars capped at 19 students. Students travel to and live together in residential housing in a new country each semester, starting their education in San Francisco, and then living in Seoul, Taipei, Hyderabad, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Berlin, and then ending their program in San Francisco.
History
Minerva Project
In April 2012, Minerva Project received US$25,000,000 in venture funding from Benchmark Capital to create the undergraduate program that would become the Minerva Schools at KGI.[2][3] Stephen Kosslyn joined Minerva in March 2013 to serve as Founding Dean. Before joining Minerva, Kosslyn served as Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and Dean of Social Sciences at Harvard University. Kosslyn was responsible for hiring the heads of the four colleges in the School of Arts & Science and overseeing the development of Minerva's seminar-based curriculum.[4]
Minerva Schools at Keck Graduate Institute
In July 2013, Minerva Project partnered with the Keck Graduate Institute to officially launch the Minerva Schools at Keck Graduate Institute.[5]
Minerva received WASC regional accreditation for five of its programs: the Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences, the Bachelor of Arts in Arts and Humanities, the Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences, the Bachelor of Science in Computational Sciences, and the Bachelor of Science in business.[6]
Minerva admitted its first class in 2014. The school offered places to 69 students out of 2,464 applications, and 29 students matriculated. This resulted in a 2.8% acceptance rate and a 42% yield.
Starting in 2016, Minerva expanded into postgraduate education by offering a Master of Science in Decision Analysis.[7][8]
In 2020, Minerva created its Visiting Scholars year. The one-year program, completed remotely, offers the four Cornerstone Courses to students accepted into a leading college or university who face challenges attending in residence for the 2020–21 academic year due to COVID-19.[9]
In 2023, Reed Hastings, co-CEO of Netflix, donated $20 million to Minerva University.[10]
Academics
Courses are conducted as online seminars capped at 19 students. Minerva applies a 1972 study[11] that shows that memory is enhanced by "deep" cognitive tasks. Such tasks include working with materials, applying it, and arguing about it instead of rote memorization. All classes begin with a short quiz and end with a second one later in the class; this is claimed to increase retention. Student performance is automatically recorded for tracking.
Students initially take four "Cornerstone Courses" that introduce "Habits of Mind" and "Foundational Concepts" that cut across the sciences and humanities. The four "Cornerstone Courses" are Empirical Analyses, Formal Analyses, Complex Systems, and Multimodal Communications. In Empirical Analyses, students learn about evaluating and analyzing scientific methods and use that knowledge to build problem-solving proposal. In Formal Analyses, students learn to evaluate and perform data analyses, and perform design thinking skills using game theory and classification method. In a humanities class, students learn the classical techniques of rhetoric and develop basic persuasive skills. Finally, in social science class, students learn about the characteristics of complex systems (intended to represent social interaction), and leaderships, self-awareness, and negotiation. Minerva encourages students to use massive open online courses to learn what is typically taught in first-year courses.[12]
Professors are trained to use Minerva's proprietary learning platform, the Minerva Forum.[12] Faculty retain intellectual property rights to their research.[12][13]
Accreditation and organization
The university is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. It first earned this accreditation in 2021 when it became a separate, independent institution under the Minerva Institute, the non-profit entity that was already operating the Minerva Schools at Keck Graduate Institute alongside the Keck Graduate Institute.
Under its first accreditation plan, Minerva's primary academic institution was its School of Arts and Sciences, which included the College of Social Sciences, the College of Natural Sciences, the College of Computational Sciences, and the College of Arts and Humanities. When the Bachelor of Science in Business was approved by WASC, it led to the creation of the School (and College) of Business. In May 2018, the schools were restructured into two divisions: the Division of Arts and Sciences and the Division of Business and Computational Sciences.
In late 2015, Minerva's Master's in Applied Arts and Sciences program received approval and regional accreditation.[14] Students could take this Masters either integrated with their undergraduate studies or following completion of their B.A./B.S. This led to the creation of the Graduate Division. Subsequently, Minerva pivoted to a Master of Science in Decision Analysis program, without the concurrent studies option.
Facilities
Minerva maintains one residence[15] hall in San Francisco, California, on Turk[16] Street,[17] as well as ones in Seoul,[18] Hyderabad,[19] Berlin,[20] Buenos Aires,[21] London, and Taipei.[22]
Minerva has no classroom facilities, since all classes are conducted through an active learning platform developed by the school, where students participate in seminar classes of up to 19 people.[23][24][25]

태재대학의 문제점을 비판하겠다.
I. 차별성
태재대학은 미네르바 대학의 교육 이념과 교육법을 토씨 하나 안 틀리고 그대로 배껴다가 사용하고 있다. 즉, 미네르바 대학에.비해 차별성이 없다. 미네르바 대학을 그대로 가져와서 차별성을 주지 않고 운영한다면 그것은 모조품에 불과하다. 결국 미네르바 대학에 붙지 못한 학생들을 위한 대체제 역할을 하게 될 것이다.
II. 언어
한국의 혁신 인재를 배출하고자 한다면 적어도 영어 뿐만 아닌 한국어로도 수업을 진행하고, 글로벌 커리큘럼들을 추가로 선정하여 차이점을 두어야 할 것이다. 영어로 수업을 진행한다는 것은 한국에서 혁신성을 가지고 있는 많은 사람들 중, 오직 소수의 영어가 가능한 사람만을 모집한다는 것이다. 즉, 창의성과 독창성을 가지고 있는 학생들의 샘플은 반영하지 못한다. 혹은 글로벌 리더를 양성하고자 한다면 왜 한국인 입학생 비율을 과반수로 설정하는 것인가? 이에 대한 설명력이 부족하다. 애매한 포지션은 훌륭한 학생들을 멀어지게 만드는 원인으로 작용할 수 있다.
III. 커리큘럼
제2외국어 2개와 컴퓨터 언어를 배운다는 커리큘럼에는 한계가 있다. 국제 사회에서 영어를 제외한 다른 언어들은 비주류 언어이다. 중국어와 스페인어 등을 제외한 대다수의 언어는 글로벌 시장에서 큰 도움이 되지 않는다. 4년 안에 제2외국어를 마스터 하는 것은 불가능하며, 오히려 한 가지에 포커스를 맞추어 영어와 컴퓨터 언어를 주로 배워야 한다. 제2외국어에 포커스를 맞추는 건 너무 한국식 교육을 그대로 따온 비혁신적, 보수적 전통에 의거한 것이 아닌가?
IV. 학교의 성실성
태재대는 작년에 오픈하지 못했고, 아직까지 태재대를 완벽히 설명할 수 있는 시스템도 갖추고 있지 않다. 학생들은 태재대의 커리큘럼을 제대로 이해하지 못하고 있고, 그냥 사이버대로 오해하고 있다. 학교는 이것을 위해 무엇을 하고 있는가? 태재대는 차별화된 홍보와 마케팅을 진행하고 있지 않다. 이는 학교의 네임밸류 상승기회의 손해로 작용한다. 또한 훌륭한 학생들을 모집하지 못하게 되면서, 자연스레 다른 혁신 대학들보다 학생들의 수준이 떨어질 수 있다.
V. 학생 선별 방법
아직 태재대가 학생을 제대로 선별한 것은 아니나, 혁신적 인재들을 모집할 수 있는 선별 방법이 없다. 미네르바의 챌린지나 레인의 오픈하우스와 같이 그들만의 차별점이 없다. GED나 일본 검정고시 같은 해외 검정고시 출신 학생들을 어떻게 받을지에 대한 구체적인 설명도 없다. 혁신을 추구하는 대학이 비전통적 학생들을 바라보지 않는다면 대체 누구를 바라보겠다는 것일까.
이 외에도 미네르바가 가진 단점들을 해결하지 못한 채로, 태재대는 큰 차별성 없이 세상에 공개되었다.
미네르바에 진학할 수 없는 학생들에게 태재대는 매력적인 대안 옵션으로 보일 수 있겠으나, 대안 옵션을 SKY를 버리면서까지 갈 학생이 얼마나 될지는 모르겠다.
태재대는 8학기 중 절반이나 서울에서 보낸다는 것도 미네르바의 하위호환이 될수밖에 없음
2023년 5월 13일 오후 1시 56분 기준으로 네이버가 제공하는 달러/원 환율이 1344$/1원인데 그럼 51,072,000원이네요. 그런데 저게 학생이 부담하는 금액이 맞나요? 1년 등록금 900만원에 생활비 정도만 부담하고 나머지는 태재대에서 지원한다고 확인했던 것 같은데
