 However, no one in Itami's family believed that he would have taken his life or that he would be mortally embarrassed by a real or alleged affair. In 2008, a former member of the Goto-gumi, a yakuza group, told a reporter, Jake Adelstein: "We set it up to stage his murder as a suicide. We dragged him up to the rooftop and put a gun in his face. We gave him a choice: jump and you might live or stay and we'll blow your face off. He jumped. He didn't live."[18][19] The attack is thought to have been due to the topic of Itami's next film, which was rumored to have been focusing on connections between the Goto-gumi and the cult-like Soka Gakkai religious group.[20]

야쿠자의 압력에도 굴하지 않는 자세를 관철해 정력적으로 작품을 발표한 이타미였지만, 1997년 12월 20일 사무실 아파트에 인접한 주차장에서 숨진 채 발견됐다. 그리고 다음날인 21일에는 이타미가 워드프로세서로 친 것으로 예상되는 "몸소 결백을 증명합니다. 아무것도 없었다는 것은 이것 이외의 방법으로는 입증할 수 없는 것입니다."라는 내용의 유서 같은 것이 사무실에서 발견됐다. 또 싸운 흔적이 없는 것으로 보아 경찰은 자살로 단정지었다. 다음날인 12월 22일에 발매된 사진 주간지 'FLASH'에는, 이타미가 젊은 여성과 둘이서 사무실에 출입하고 있는 2장의 사진이 게재되어 두 사람이 교제하고 있다는 내용의 기사가 적혀 있었다. 그래서 경찰은 이타미의 죽음을 이 불륜 보도에 대한 '항의 자살'로 파악했다.

그러나 이타미를 오래전부터 알고 지낸 영화감독 오시마 나기사와 라쿠고가 타치카와 단시는 "불륜 보도 정도의 일로 저 녀석은 자살하지 않는다." "투신 자살은 절대로 선택하지 않는다."라고 말하며 이 자살설을 부정했다. 또 이타미는 당시 5개~6개의 시나리오를 작성해, 차기작을 구상하고 있었다. 또한 이타미는 자신의 레터링에 자부심을 가진 글꼴 디자이너였고, 글씨에 남다른 애착을 가지고 있었을 정도로 명필가였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 유서가 워드프로세서로 적혔다는 점, 그리고 유서의 문장이 문법적으로 정확한 언어를 구사한 이타미라고는 생각할 수 없는 서투른 문장이었다는 점, 게다가 생전 이타미는 사진주간지 'FLASH'의 기자로부터 불륜 의혹에 대해 질문을 받았을 때 "아내 미야모토에게 물어보면 돼. (불륜의혹은) 늘 있었던 일이니까"라고 웃으면서 말한것으로 인해 자살설을 의문시하는 목소리가 다수 나왔다.

그리고 이타미가 사망하기 5일 전까지 의료폐기물 문제를 취재한 것으로 밝혀졌는데, 이것이 원인이 되어 관계자에게 살해된 것이 아니냐는 '타살설'도 부상했다. 또 이타미가 한 거대 종교단체[16]와 야쿠자의 관계를 그린 영화 기획도 진행하고 있었으며, 이를 달가워하지 않는 야쿠자 관계자에게 자살로 위장해 살해당했다는 설도 있다. 요미우리 신문 사회부에서 활동한 미국인 기자 제이크 에델스타인(Jake Adelstein)은 "야쿠자 관계자 5명이 이타미에게 총을 겨누어 옥상에서 뛰어내리게 했다."라고 증언하는 사람에게 취재를 했다는 것을 자신의 저서에서 쓰기도 했다.

공식적으로 이타미의 사인은 자살로 확정됐지만, 미심쩍은 구석이 많기 때문에 지금까지도 일본에서는 그가 자살한게 아니라 타살당했다고 말하는 사람들이 굉장히 많다. #

On October 14, 2008 Goto was expelled from the Yamaguchi-gumi [1] and the Goto-gumi was split into two parts, headed by Mr. Rachi and Mr. Tsukamoto, two of Goto's chief executives.[2] At the time of the expulsion, the supreme godfather Shinobu Tsukasa was in jail, and the expulsion was officially accepted by the number-two, Kiyoshi Takayama, the head of the second Kodo-kai.[3] In April 2009 Tadamasa Goto publicly entered study for Buddhist priesthood.[4]

Activities
The Goto-gumi was active in various fields of business, such as the financial industry, real estate industry, construction industry, and in the political world.[5] Also, the Goto-gumi had allegedly been very influential in the entertainment industry.[6]

Foreign connections
The Goto-gumi had allegedly been connected to the Hong Kong mafia, and police reports indicated that the Goto-gumi had smuggled firearms from the Philippines, where they had connections with some of the country's high-ranking military officers. Members, especially senior members often visited foreign countries to acquire shooting skills.[5]


Goto's FBI scandal
In 2001 the FBI's representative in Tokyo arranged for Tadamasa Goto, then the head of the Goto-gumi, to receive a liver transplant in the United States in return for a $100,000 donation to the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and information about Yamaguchi-gumi operations in the U.S.[7] This was done without prior consultation of the Japanese National Police Agency. The journalist who uncovered the deal, Jake Adelstein, received threats from Goto and was given police protection in the US and in Japan.[8]
